Robert Lyman (Ben) Brungraber, Ph.D., P.E. (Chapter 7, Traditional Joinery), is a manager/part-owner of Benson Woodworking Co., Inc., in Alstead Center, New Hampshire, a firm that has designed and built some of the most prominent heavy timber frame structures in the United States, including more than 30 large, public projects. He has also repaired both the oldest and the longest covered bridges in Pennsylvania. Phillip C. Pierce, P.E. (Chapter 15, Covered Bridges), a recognized structural and design engineer, has led over 100 bridge design/rehabilitation projects and more than 1000 bridge inspection/evaluations, mostly in the northeastern United States. He is the author of several papers, and a popular public speaker about wooden bridges. He lives in Binghamton, New York. Fred Severud, P.E.
